John A. Zachman must be recognized as a pioneer in the study of enterprise architecture. While with IBM he first penned the Zachman Framework thirty years ago; which is essentially a chart depicting elements he feels are appropriate to examine business architecture vis a vis information systems.

Unlike other approaches to the study of an enterprise, TZF does not suggest a method of analysis. It is a “chart of elements” that can be used to analyze a business enterprise.

The two dimensional Zachman Framework is available from Zachman International's webpage via a simple download. However, Zachman International offers a certification program which they feel is essential to understanding and mastering the use of the Framework. There are four levels of certification: Associate, Practitioner, Professional, and Educator.

Zachman International's web site lists date and locations of certification programs.
